Session b)
Linking with Literacy
in Book-Based Storylines

As a self confessed read-a-holic Sallie will draw on her long experience of designing and delivering Book-Based Storylines for children of all ages, showing how the strategies central to the Storyline approach match current thinking on Literacy Education.

Using various examples she will discuss the integration of the four outcomes of language in a book study. Storyline fits well with the renewed emphasis on the collaborative, social context of learning and the whole language approach. When pupils are immersed in a Book-Based Storyline their experiences match those of the skilled, reflective
reader. Their shared enjoyment of the story does not prohibit more critical analysis of text or serious consideration of the author's intentions. In depth studies of quality fiction over a period of years provides for progression in skills, but more importantly fosters a love of reading.
