A one-day Conference organised by IQSH Kiel
A rich and varied programme was designed by Gisela Ehlers of IQSH Kiel for this one day conference in Bürgerhaus Kronshagen on the Teaching of English. 260 teachers of English from primary schools in Schleswig Holstein participated. Gisela Ehlers will retire this summer and the first speakers, Dr Thomas Riecke-Baulecke, Director of the Institute and Astrid Finger from the Ministry of Education took the opportunity to thank her for her many years of service to foreign language teaching in the State. The warmth of the response to their opening remarks demonstrated the feelings of the audience. She will be greatly missed at the Institute.
The keynote speech was a dialogue between Gisela and Steve Bell with the title “Storyline goes Language Teaching”. Over the past 15 years Gisela has adapted Storyline as a strategy for motivating young pupils and evidence of this is contained in the highly acclaimed Comenius Project which was completed in 2006 www.creativedialogues.lernnetz.de She will, of course, still be continuing her Comenius Storyline Summer Schools at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. These are supported by the European Union and have proved to be very popular with international groups of language teachers. In this work she is assisted by Hannelore Tait who was also presenting at the conference.
